FTC seeks research help from DEF CON hackers

The Federal Trade Commission made an appeal at DEF CON in Las Vegas last week in hopes of getting hackers to help them crack down on manufacturers and service providers that leave customers vulnerable.

Top of the list: ransomware, malvertising, networked cars and security for the internet of things.

Of particular interest in the case of IoT is preventing one device from compromising a consumer’s entire private network, says Lorrie Cranor, the FTC’s chief technologist.

Telstra allegedly withdraws from marriage equality debate under church pressure

Allegedly under pressure from the Catholic Church, Australia’s largest telecommunications provider will not be participating in the public campaign in support of same-sex marriage, a new report suggests.

According to The Australian, Archdiocese of Sydney business manager Michael Digges approached a number of companies who had given permission for their logo to be used in a newspaper advertisement in support of marriage equality in May 2015. 

He suggested the church could withdraw business from participating companies, including Telstra, which reportedly serves Catholic schools around Australia. Read more…

All the analytics tools in the world won’t do a company much good if it doesn’t know what data it has to analyze. Tamr offers a free, downloadable tool designed to help tackle that “dark data” problem.

Dark data generally refers to all the information an organization collects, processes and stores but doesn’t use for analytics or other purposes. It’s often unstructured or qualitative data that’s harder to keep track of than numerical data is, and by research firm IDC’s reckoning, it can account for as much as 90 percent of an organization’s information assets.
